Sudan: Drinking Water Quality Testing

Introduction

There is growing awareness that drinking-water can become contaminated following its collection from communal sources such as wells and tap-stands, as well as during its storage in the home. Testing and monitoring the contaminants can lead to proper intervention and prevent incident of diarrhea and other water related diseases especially during emergencies.

This workshop is designed for those interested in conducting drinking water quality testing as part of the implementation, monitoring.The training is designed to provide the participants with details on the use of both laboratory and field based water testing kits for physical, chemical and microbiological contamination of drinking water and its importance in water quality monitoring at the field level or in remote areas where sophisticated laboratory facilities are not available. It will also provide information on the participatory approach in water quality monitoring-community based water quality monitoring. Participants themselves will be performing water quality analysis in the field by using these low cost field testing kits. This would give them a first hand experience on water quality analysis . Other topics to be addressed include health and safety; sanitary inspections; World Health Organization guidelines and national standards for drinking water quality. The participants will also be able to prepare water quality testing plan analyze and interpret given Drinking water quality data and report the findings. The broader objective of this training course is to transfer knowledge and skills for participants independently to carry out different water quality tests

Objective

On conclusion of the course, the participant should be able to:

· Explain the purpose and scope of drinking water quality testing

· Define safe drinking water

· Describe different physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters of drinking water

· Find and interpret national standards and World Health Organization guidelines for drinking water quality

· Take a water sample from various sources

· Discuss different testing options, including observation, using portable test kits, and using a commercial laboratory

· Use portable water quality test kits to determine the physical, chemical, and microbiological quality of drinking water

· Use good techniques to maintain quality control

· Analyze and interpret water quality data

· Read and interpret a laboratory water quality testing report

· Conduct a sanitary inspection using a standard

  • Individuals working in water and sanitation, community development or health projects seeking simple solutions for water quality testing
  • Technicians or individuals who will be taking water samples, conducting tests and interpreting results
